Family Tragedy Friday 22nd November 2000

On this day my beautiful young cousin Uaneen Fitzsimons was killed.
A dreadful moment for her Parents, Brian and Mary and her brothers  Ciaran and Shane and sister Sharon, along with her wider family and the many who loved her dearly. There will always be a hurt in the minds and souls of those who knew her.
Uaneen, at the age of 29, had made a name for herself as a tv and radio presenter in the South of Ireland, also presenting those great annual concerts at Slane.  She was destined, it appeared, for greater things in the world of broadcasting, but when an articulated lorry skewed into the car she was traveling as a passenger her life and career came to an abrupt end.  What a shame! What a tragedy! From a human point of view.

The grief caused by such an occurrence is hard to bear.
Twenty years ago my  little son Tomás Ruarii was crushed to death under the wheels of a milk lorry, at the age of 1 year 9 months.
Only when such a thing happens do you fully realise how much of yourself is invested in your children.  I simply did not wish to continue living, and it required great effort to continue to live and work in such dark sorrow.
By faith I know that my little son rejoices in the great goodness of God.
I am certain too that Uaneen, with her wonderful, smiling personality, also rejoices in the being of God - the essence of love.
May we too share in this wonder, when we join them.
My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to Brian and Mary - and to Ciaran  and Shane and their wives, and to Sharon and her husband. They will  miss Uaneen grievously, but as time goes on perhaps they will rejoice more and more at the thought of her beautiful life.
