Mary Did You Know?
(Buddy Greene, Mark Lowry)

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little boy
You’ve kissed the face of god

Mary, did you know?
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
And the dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the lamb

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is lord of all creation?
Did you know
That your baby boy will one day rules the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heavens perfect lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the great I am

The Incarnation

He Who created the universe did not think it beneath His dignity to enter the world

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed …." Lk1.46

…. As his brothers and sisters we share in his humanity - and we are invited to share in His Divinity ….

Jesus is one Divine Person possessing two natures: the nature of being truly human - drawn from the body of Mary - and the nature of being fully and truly God, possessed as of right.

It is not surprising that this is a mystery!

Only God knows Himself perfectly.  Our human way of knowing is restricted - by virtue of our created human nature. (Strange that we can often forget that we are created!)

Jesus is the Word in the Mind of God (according to the Disciple John).   He is the perfect image and knowledge that God has of Himself.

It is this Word Who has come among us, fully sharing our human nature, and offering to share with us, give us full participation in, His own Divine Nature.

He touches us through the love of the Holy Spirit, formally given through baptism, and draws us into the glory of His Divine nature.

When we are first touched by the Spirit of God we may think we have gone mad, for this way of knowing is beyond our nature, beyond our natural way of knowing things.

As created human beings our ways of knowing are limited.  Development can be painful, even in the natural order, for we are not fully aware of the spiritual aspect of our being, not aware of the power and strength of spirit, human or divine, of the possibilities involved.

We should not, of course, scorn the earthy side of our nature.  The fact that Jesus now shares in our humanity, is truly become flesh, for our sake, redeems and uplifts human nature, emphasises the value of 'ordinary' life.

Through the gift of faith we are temples of the Holy Spirit, even in this life.  Here and now we share in Christ's Divinity, enabling us to live with unselfish love.

We should not be surprised by moments of realisation of just how imperfect we are - how grubby, earthy and selfish we are by contrast with the intensity and purity of God's love.  This is an introduction to the reality of God.  We can be filled with fear, with awe; and it is something we must learn to live with.  It is an introduction to real faith.  We can feel guilt, and sorrow - which is necessary for health.

But we should not, also, be surprised if we occasionally find ourselves uplifted to joy and peace beyond our understanding, caught up in the laughter and love of God.

In the celebration of the incarnation and Birth of Christ we can be touched by a spirit of love that goes far beyond our nature.

A Prayer: May we be brought, by God's power, into the greatness, glory and love of His nature.

It will be answered insofar as we leave ourselves open to Him in faith, and strive to lead our lives in that faith.

God is truly with us, in the Person of Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit, truly our Brother. He is especially close to us when we feel, and acknowledge, that we are not worthy of such a relationship. At this point we become worthy.
