Welcome to Mike O'Shea's

Speakers' Corner

first thoughts

Life is mysterious, fascinating, pleasurable - occasionally joyful - but also dangerous, painful, heartbreaking .... and it leads to death!
I can’t think of anything more important, more vital, to think about, to ask questions about - to get answers!
I have been thinking and asking questions for the past forty years or so. (I didn’t start until circa age 24! A late beginner!).  There's a lot I still don’t understand, but I am consoled by the thought that those who think they understand everything are certainly guilty of exaggeration, and are perhaps, temporarily at least, obsessively insane (......a god-complex?)
On the other hand anyone who refuses to think and ask questions ostrich4.wmf (4228 bytes) about his/her life, and the certainty of death, is likely to be either congenitally defective (deserving of compassion) or to have a closed mind, distrusting reason and fearful of truth (a self-made moron?)   - possibly accepting as a matter of fact that questions about life and death  cannot be answered - or is perhaps someone who is just plain lazy - or exclusively engaged in pursuit of passing pleasures and interests: marihuana? money? alcohol? sex? power? butterflies?
My view is that if I can ask a reasonable question I expect to receive a reasonable answer ..... perhaps not immediately - for search and discovery takes time - but certainly in due course. The fact that my personal mental powers are restricted, that I am quite often puzzled and distraught - that I am a limited, defective human being - does not detract from my capacity to perceive and understand truth, even in a limited fashion - and if I ignore truth and reason and understanding I court unreason, delusion and self-destruction: insanity, in fact! Not for me! Hopefully!
